Physics Glossary

The show's creator, Barbara Hall, is said to be a science geek, or a "woman of science". Physics is often used to allegorize concepts throughout Joan of Arcadia. Here's a few of them.

  • Laws of Thermodynamics -
    1. Energy can be neither created or destroyed. The total amount of energy and matter in the Universe remains constant, merely changing from one form to another.
    2. In all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state.
  • Special Theory of Relativity - The nature of the universe must not change for an observer if their inertial state changes.
  • Uncertainty Principle - In quantum mechanics, two observable quantities, such as the position and the momentum of a particle, cannot be both measured to a precise value at the same time.
